Ruskington Parish Council is pleased to announce that we have been awarded a grant of £12,536 from the National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF) to support the renovation of the historic lychgate.

History of the Lychgate

Erected in 1901 by the Pattison family to commemorate the death of Queen Victoria, the lychgate has been a key feature of the cemetery for over a century. Following an inspection in 2024, significant issues were identified, including timber decay, insect infestation, and a bowing metal tie rod.

Conservation and Repair

Carre Heritage, a local business specialising in heritage and conservation joinery, will carry out the restoration. The work will focus on sensitive conservation, repairing and reusing as much of the original material as possible to maintain the gate's historical integrity.

Temporary Cemetery Access

During the renovation, an alternative entrance will be created, ensuring no damage to the environment or graves.

Community Involvement

The Parish Council extends its thanks to residents who completed the consultation questionnaire, as well as the individuals, groups, churches, and venues who provided letters of support. Without this community effort, securing the funding would not have been possible.

This project, made possible by the National Lottery players, will ensure that the lychgate remains an attractive and safe entrance to the cemetery and continues its legacy as an important feature of the village.
