Information for residents from Lincolnshire County Council.

What is Micro Surfacing?

Micro Surfacing is a surface treatment which will create a new and uniform surface. Laid over the existing footway it protects and seals out any water. It's a cold applied product of bitumen emulsion and stone, which is mixed on site using specialist equipment and spread by trained operatives.

When do we use Micro?

We tend to use Micro surfacing in urban areas where we need to seal and maintain the existing surface.

Advantages

  • Low cost.
  • Extends footway life.
  • Restores texture/grip.
  • Quick and easy to apply.
  • Low carbon footprint.
  • Removes minor dips and small defects.

Disadvantages

  • Does not remove any structural unevenness
  • Not suitable for high stress sites.

What does it involve?

Although every site can have a different specification, the process will involve some or all of the following:

  • Weed killing.
  • Jet washing or cleaning.
  • Lifting of ironworks.
  • Cutting back undergrowth.
  • Taping of kerbs and ironwork.
  • Mixing of material.
  • Spreading the existing surface with a black bitumen emulsion, using squeegees and brushes.
  • General cleaning up.

What precautions should I take?

We always aim to keep disruption and inconvenience to a minimum, and for both your safety and the safety of the workforce, we would be grateful if you could observe the following:

Please do:

Check that there is no material on your shoes, bicycles or any items likely to make contact with the surface before entering your property. If you do get bitumen on your clothes it can be removed with a proprietary cleaner.

Please do not:

  • Park on the footpath. Move any temporary signage or barriers on site.
  • Walk or drive on the surface until temporary signs and barriers have all been removed. The material could be permanently scarred as a result.
  • Allow pets to walk on wet material, please check them before they enter your property.

How you can help?

Please inspect any hedges, shrubs, grass and branches you may have that are near, or overhang the footway and arrange to have them cut back.

Access to your property will be restricted whilst the material is wet, but it usually dries in about an hour.

If you have any special access needs, arrangements or deliveries etc. whilst we are working, please speak to a member of the crew on site to see how we can help.

The progress of our works is weather dependent and therefore unforeseen circumstances can arise. Should there be any changes, residents will be notified on the information boards which are situated on your road.

Help & advice

Please do not hesitate to ask for assistance from one of our operatives during the works, if required.
