You may sometimes hear the term flood risk management system, or FRMS. These are the groups of flood defences and related structures that help reduce flood risk in a specific area.
A flood risk management system can include things like river channels, embankments, flood walls, and coastal defences. Rather than looking at each structure on its own, they are managed together as one system that protects a community or stretch of land.
The Environment Agency uses these systems to understand how well flood defences are working, decide where maintenance is most needed, and plan future investment. This helps make sure funding is focused on areas where the risk to people, homes, and businesses is highest.
Each flood risk management system is given a rating based on the potential impact of flooding in that area. This helps the Environment Agency prioritise work and manage flood risk consistently across the country.
This information has been shared with the Parish Council by the Environment Agency as part of a monthly update to help explain how flood risk is managed. It is not a flood warning or an alert.
