This morning, Councillor Owen Ditch, the chairman of Ruskington Parish Council (RPC), paid a special visit to St George's Academy at the Ruskington campus.
During his visit, he met with enthusiastic student representatives from years 7 to 10.
Earlier this year, the students at St George's Academy took part in the Kindness Campaign, where each year group actively raised funds through various activities. Their efforts included sponsored swims, sponsored silence, temporary tattoos, football penalty shootouts, and a Year 9-led London Mini Marathon around the school field (2.62 miles).
Councillor Ditch shared news of the recent storm Babet, which struck Ruskington on Friday, 20 October 2023, causing significant flooding throughout the village. In response, RPC members, along with dedicated staff and community volunteers, worked tirelessly to distribute sandbags, check on residents, and provide shelter and refreshments to those in need.
During his visit, Councillor Ditch inquired why the students chose to donate their hard-earned money to the Ruskington Parish Council. The students explained that many of them knew individuals directly affected by the floods and recognised the vital role the council played in assisting those families.
In a heartwarming moment, the students presented Councillor Ditch with a cheque for £428.63 to support the flood fund. They expressed their sincere hope that the donation would help those who lost possessions in the flood and contribute to future flood prevention efforts.
Councillor Ditch expressed his deep gratitude on behalf of the council, stating, "We are incredibly thankful for this generous donation. It will go a long way in supporting our community and strengthening our flood prevention initiatives. The kindness and solidarity shown by the students of St George's Academy are truly commendable."
This act of generosity is a shining example of the positive impact that community spirit and young people's initiatives can have on the wider community.
